Will My Braces Set Off Metal Detectors? Busting 4 Common Myths

No, braces won’t set off the metal detector at the airport. They’re typically made of stainless steel, which is non-magnetic, and very very small compared to items like electronic devices and weapons that the TSA is meant to catch.

Despite having proven themselves for decades, there is still a lot of misinformation about braces floating around online, but don’t be fooled! The facts reveal why the most frequent concerns about this treatment are usually just hot air.

Myth: Braces are for children and teens

Truth: Braces are effective for all ages

Dentists and orthodontists typically recommend braces for children because the bones in their face and mouth aren’t fully formed yet, meaning it’s easier to make changes with orthodontics. Despite this, they still work for adults.

Even if you’re in your 20s, 30s, or even 60s, braces can correct crookedness, crowding, gaps, and overbite/underbite. It might just take a little longer compared to younger patients, but the result will still be a beautifully straight smile!

Myth: It takes several years for braces to work

Truth: The average treatment time is 12-24 months

Expanding on the point from above, the expected timeline for braces depends on many factors, such as the starting position of a patient’s teeth and what type of problems are being corrected (overall bite issues require more time compared to moving individual teeth).

Still, most patients finish treatment in around 12-24 months. An orthodontist will give you a more definitive time estimate when you come in for a consultation, but don’t believe anything you read that states you’ll be wearing them for five years or more! This length of time stems from addressing very complex issues and often includes corrective surgery, so it’s FAR from average.

Myth: Braces will hurt the entire time

Truth: Most people forget they are wearing braces

While some mild soreness is expected right after having braces placed or adjusted, these symptoms are typically short-lived and minor. In fact, it’s a sign the treatment is working—this indicates it’s placing pressure on the teeth to move them.

Other people worry that the brackets and wires will cause sore spots on their lips and cheeks. Just like the initial soreness, this can occur, but the mouth adapts fairly quickly. Your soft oral tissues actually replace themselves faster than most other parts of the body. Thin callouses will develop, and before you know it, you’ll find yourself forgetting you even have braces.

It’s no accident that braces have been around since you were a child and are still a go-to treatment today. Whether you’re on the fence about getting them for yourself or your child, trust that they offer a predictable, comfortable, and reliable path toward straighter teeth that won’t make you miss your flight!
